Managers, do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by constant change?
How can you meet your leadership’s expectations, support your team, and manage your own emotions without burning out ?
Understanding Emotional Agility
To explain the concept of emotional agility and provide resources to help you develop it—so you can better adapt to the inevitable changes in the business world—allow me to share a real-life example from one of my recent coaching sessions.
I recently worked with a newly promoted manager in a company undergoing a major restructuring.
This transition presented a real challenge :
✅ Quickly integrating new work methods
✅ Presenting them to a new team resistant to change
✅ Meeting the equally high expectations of senior leadership
My client found himself in the middle of an emotional tornado that was difficult to manage!
During our discussions, he shared his feelings of being overwhelmed:
➡️ On one hand, he struggled with his own fear of not being up to the task.
➡️ On the other, he had to deal with his team’s intense emotions: stress, frustration, even skepticism.
This dual responsibility created a persistent sense of imbalance. He wanted to meet leadership’s expectations while maintaining a strong connection with his team—all while managing his own emotions.
Together, we worked on strengthening his emotional agility to:
✅ Defuse internal tensions, whether with his team or leadership
✅ Adapt to change without losing himself in the process
✅ Regain confidence and control in his role
Managing Under Pressure
This client is far from an isolated case—many managers experience high stress and emotional instability due to heavy workloads and constant demands for adaptation.
This pressure intensifies when a company is undergoing restructuring, requiring managers to:
➡️ Implement new standards and ways of working quickly
➡️ Balance the expectations of their team and leadership
➡️ Handle their own emotional reactions to uncertainty
The weight of these dual responsibilities: managing both people and performance—can amplify stress, making decision-making more difficult and emotional strain more intense.
The Core Challenge: Managing Emotions & Team Tension
Change is rarely welcomed with open arms. Employees often feel resistance, frustration, or even disengagement.
If their concerns are not acknowledged and addressed, tensions can escalate into conflicts or complete disengagement.
Key takeaway: Open communication is crucial. The more employees understand the “why” behind changes, the more likely they are to accept them.
Did you know? After a restructuring, employees may experience a psychological shock, feeling insecure or resistant to change. Creating a safe space for dialogue is essential to help teams transition smoothly.
Avoiding Burnout & Staying Effective While Staying True to Your Values
Burnout doesn’t just impact personal well-being—it also affects team productivity and company performance.
How can managers remain resilient in times of change?
✅ Take a step back – Resistance isn’t personal; it’s a reaction to uncertainty. Don’t internalize it.
✅ Balance empathy and leadership – Understand your team’s concerns while providing clear direction.
✅ Reconnect with your core values – Staying grounded in your leadership vision helps navigate uncertainty with confidence.
➡️ Managers are not responsible for organizational changes, but they must implement them. With the right emotional tools, they can lead with calm, confidence, and clarity.
Emotional Agility: A Key to Compassionate & Effective Leadership
To build trust and productivity, emotional intelligence is just as important as technical expertise.
Emotional agility helps leaders:
✔️ Recognize their own emotions and avoid being overwhelmed by them
✔️ Anticipate and manage their team’s emotional reactions
✔️ Foster resilient and engaged teams during periods of uncertainty
🚀 Consider emotions as a foundation for maintaining motivation and positive team dynamics!
