We often tend to identify ourselves with what we represent: our job, social status, achievements or even our failures. And yet, none of these define our true worth or our deepest essence.
They do offer a sense of reassurance, as they fulfill a very human need for belonging — but at what cost?
Being part of a winning team, having a prestigious or exciting career, reaching a certain social status… all of this creates the illusion that we are “worthy” of our ambitions.
Our behavior and communication are shaped by this mindset—especially on social media, where image often takes precedence over reality.
But does that image truly reflect who we are?
A job, even one we love, is only one piece of who we are. And when we face failure, doubt, or professional instability, identifying too strongly with that role can cause deep inner suffering.
So how can we detach from the ego?By coming back to ourselves.
How ego identification holds us back from being ourselves and growing
The ego is shaped by our experiences and how we interact with the outside world. But when we become too attached to it, it can blur our perception of reality. We end up trapped in expectations and beliefs that limit our ability to grow and be fre
Signs of excessive ego identification
- Fear of judgment: This emotional barrier pushes us to play a role instead of being our authentic selves.
- Comparison: It distorts our self-worth and breeds unnecessary envy or insecurity.
- Perfectionism: We hide our vulnerabilities out of fear of failure.
- Resistance to change or taking (reasonable) risks: Driven by a fear of losing control and disappointing others.
How to act from your essence, not your ego
Reconnecting with our true essence requires us to let go of control, to show our cracks, and to live by our own values, not what we think we “should” be.
Acting from the essence : 3 Simple daily practices
1. Cultivate mindfulness Spend a few quiet minutes each day meditating, walking in silence, or just observing the world without judgment. This helps you become more present and attuned to your inner self.
2. Let go of the need to control Embrace uncertainty. Learn to delegate. Be more flexible. These shifts reduce pressure and create space for new possibilities.
3. Practice Gratitude Keep a gratitude journal or simply say “thank you” more often. Such a small act,yet it reconnects you to the present and nurtures genuine relationships.
And you? What’s your favorite way to return to what truly matters and quiet the ego?
